Check out this hot track from Rockwell Powers (of Tacoma’s 10th and Commerce) and Ill Pill featuring Geo and Can-U.
Tacoma’s hip-hop scene is surprisingly understated and under appreciated. If ya’ll don’t know who Can-U is he has been a leader in the Tacoma scene for a LONG time. He was doing his thing before the Seattle area scene blew up and continues to be a journeyman. Rockwell Powers is the emcee portion of Tacoma group 10th and Commerce (shout out to their drummer and Aaron and former Seattle All-City Band homie) and is one of the strongest voices in Tacoma.
This track is not only free but also a true gem. Get hip to Tacoma, Seattle is dope but don’t ever disregard the long history of contribution from the little cousin to the south.

— Macklemore, on his Dave Niehaus tribute performance of “My Oh My” on April 8th at SafeCo field
Back in late 2010, the guys at Sound On The Sound produced some startlingly-groovy recordings of local Seattle band Pickwick. Here’s a double-shot of swinging tracks from that session.
Take your local gospel choir. Pass tambourines to the congregation and toss a bass guitar to Pastor Funkadelic. Jazz up that electric organ. Liberally sprinkle some relentless Queens Of The Stone Age-ish robot rock drive, throw in some Bill Withers-esque warbling vocals. Then pack ‘em all in your garage and hit “Record.” Something like that.
The band’s unique, pulsating fusion of soul and pop never flies in your face. Individual showmanship is relegated, allowing the tentative ebbs and flows to take center stage, where frontman Galen Disston’s bellows are aided by the confident but judicious chops of his bandmates. Whether knee-deep in a wailing choir or head-banging along with a gritty organ-laden beat, there’s this palpable, greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts connection in the group. On top of it all, they look like they’re having a blast.
Wanna see ‘em live? Pickwick will be playing on April 23rd at the High Dive music venue in Seattle, and at the Moore Theater on May 21st. Ticket information for these shows can be found on the group’s MySpace, along with many more tracks and additional recordings from the same primo Sound On The Sound session!
I came across a really awesome event I’d never heard of, and had to share. Yesterday on The Stranger’s music blog ‘Line Out’, a post was made about Record Store Day. There’s a number of stores participating in the day with signings, in-store performances, and some amazing deals. Line Out shared a link for the entire list of events, and also gave a list of some Seattle involvement. Definitely something to check out this Saturday, April 16th!

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Perform “My Oh My” At Opening Day For The Seattle Mariners
If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s proof positive that Seattle is one of the only places in the country where you find support for local artists before any nationally touring artist. Opening day’s across the country were headlined by Top 40 artists, and Seattle chose to let Dave’s tribute stay true to what he stood for, the people of Seattle.
Dave was not only a broadcaster. He was the voice of a generation. The ever-struggling Mariners and never-ending fan support for them is part of the Seattle culture. Regardless of how the team was playing, Dave was the voice of the people. “My Oh My” isn’t just another rap song, it’s a tribute to the legendary voice of the community that is Dave Niehaus by the up and coming voice of the new generation of local legends, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
Evident in the video above, the tribute performance of “My Oh My”, had the crowd in an emotional uproar. Although the Mariners didn’t start their season as well as we may have liked, this was still a very memorable performance and shows what Seattle is all about.
What city would have a local artist perform for opening day? Where would you find such a tribute to a local hero? Only in rain city, that’s where. Sea-town up.
R.I.P Dave Niehaus.

Today’s featured Hip-Hop artist, Seattle area artist Avatar Young Blaze. He’s got a smooth mafioso type of style that I think you all will dig. Here’s his video for “Kalashnikov” featuring Yaponchik Ivankov and produced by Sledgren.
Check it out, enjoy, and re-blog!
The record label announced on their homepage yesterday that it was turning 23 years old. Label chief Jonathan Poneman shared in a quote posted that on April 1, 1988 the label officially had their first office space. The label highlighted some of the albums they’ve proudly released in the past year, including music from Mogwai, Obits, and Papercuts. They had an even longer list of upcoming releases from bands such as The Head and the Heart, Fleet Foxes, Fruit Bats, and Chad VanGaalan.
The label has played a huge part in the music that Seattle has been so well known for over the past 23 years. The label started out holding true to the grunge scene in the area; as the label for Nirvana, there is no doubting that. The label has grown and expanded since, and today is home to an incredible list of some amazing new talent that has made it huge.
So, Happy Birthday to Sub Pop records. Heres to many more years and many more amazing records to come!

If you’re as big of a Ben Gibbard fan as I am, you’ll be just as excited as I was when I heard Death Cab For Cutie released their first single on Monday from the upcoming Codes and Keys album. The song titled ‘You Are A Tourist’ has given me high hopes for the new album, which is set to release on May 31st. Check out the song on The End where bassist Nick Harmer premiered the song:
The Fresh Northwest crew did an interview with local band “Purple”, check it out here!
You can catch “Purple” live every Thursday night at Rico’s Pub in downtown Pullman!
Helluvastate just released a free download EP titled “Adventures in Helluvastate”.
The group is a supergroup collab of sorts featuring Tay Sean of Helladope and TH of State Of The Artist.
I personally recommend the intro track “An Illtroduction” and track #7 “An Ode to Outlaws ft Mikey Nice” which has been floating around for a long time and is included in this release as a polished track.
